Grant Competition for Non-profit and Non-governmental Romanian Organizations
Deadline: 30 July 2019
The U.S. Embassy Bucharest/Bureau of Public Affairs of the U.S. Department of State has announced an open competition for non-profit non-governmental Romanian organizations in the field of media education to apply for a grant of up to $35,000 to design, carry out, and evaluate media literacy workshops for a minimum number of 500 high school students from the rural areas of Teleorman, Ialomita, and Tulcea counties and to create a virtual media literacy resource hub for youth. The project will be planned and executed October 1, 2019 – September 1, 2020.
Given the continuous change of media landscape, both technology and content-wise, this project aims to provide workshops reaching a minimum of 500 high school students from the rural areas of Teleorman, Ialomita and Tulcea counties to improve the students’ critical thinking and ability to analyze various media. Educating students on how to access, evaluate, identify trustworthy information resources, and create media content contributes to a better-informed and more involved citizenry, as well as helps inoculate them against propaganda and manipulation by information aggression.
The workshops should be designed to include: discussions on topics such as information resources, various types of news, media formats, and communication technologies; presentations on criteria used to evaluate information (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, Purpose); hands-on exercises to identify credible information, to spot fake news or propaganda, and to conduct fact checking; debates on the impact of disinformation in the daily life; disinformation vs. misinformation; media content production and social media sharing; ethics/intellectual property elements.
The workshops will constantly refer to and promote the virtual media literacy resource hub and will be evaluated both on content relevancy, and information delivery efficiency.
